The Current Situation and Developmental Direction of Korean Addiction Service Delivery System

Abstract
In the past 10 years, a growing number of Korean have had an addiction(either from alcohol and/or other drugs, gambling, internet). Addiction devastates individuals and families, but it is also a social and economic crisis. There are high prevalence of addiction problems in Korea. The aim of this study is to review addiction problems and service delivery system in relation to the management of addiction problems in Korea, with a specific focus on the role of mental health social work. Findings show the lack of systemic features in organizational structure, fiscal problems and the scarcity of experts. Despite the increased awareness of the necessity for addiction policy and service, each addiction system is developed independently, policies, funding and service delivery models vary significantly. Developments in legislation and regulations, in prevention and care are described. The improvement directions have been suggested in the form of integrative addiction service delivery systems. The government needs to constantly evaluate its policy and develop its options within the area of legislation and regulations which should also include critical comparison with the situation in other countries. Integrated addiction management system must become more responsive to addiction and its symptoms.
